Han and Tibetan Residential Patterns in Lhasa

چکیده

Ethnic conflict remains surprisingly persistent throughout the world. The persistence is particularly surprising in socialist countries, where one might have thought that the narrowing of income gaps between all ethnic groups, the favored investment projects in ethnic minority regions, the official emphasis on equal education and occupational opportunity (often in favor of minority groups), and affirmative-action programs to ensure that ethnic minorities were well-represented in national congress and official positions would have provided significant new contacts and created new relationships among ethnic groups. In the summer of 1988, a survey was carried out to study the social and economic changes and current situation of the Han-Tibetan relationship in the Tibet Autonomous Region . With survey data on ethnic contact in the city of Lhasa, this article examines to what extent our initial assumptions about new ethnic relationships have been realized, and, if there are still serious problems among ethnic groups, what are the reasons. This study indicates many unintended consequences of social policy, some of them unique to socialist societies and others universal, and the aspects of society which are difficult to change even with the most enlightened policies.

Anthropometric Measures of 9- to 10-Year-Old Native Tibetan Children Living at 3700 and 4300 m Above Sea Level and Han Chinese Living at 3700 m

A high residential altitude impacts on the growth of children, and it has been suggested that linear growth (height) is more affected than body mass. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of obesity, overweight, underweight, and stunting in groups of native Tibetan children living at different residential altitudes (3700 vs 4300 m above sea level) and across ancestry (nati...

Acute mountain sickness, arterial oxygen saturation and heart rate among Tibetan students who reascend to Lhasa after 7 years at low altitude: a prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to estimate the incidence of acute mountain sickness (AMS) and address the changes in arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and heart rate (HR) in native Tibetans who reascend to the high-altitude city of Lhasa (3658 m) after a 7-year stay at low altitude. METHODS We followed two cohorts of students aged 17-21 years (859 Native Tibetan and 801 Han Chine...

Lhasa Tones

This paper describes tones on citation syllables in Lhasa Tibetan. Acoustic data from six speakers showed that Lhasa has a high vs. low tonal contrast on the one hand; and its tonal melodies are highly constrained by syllable types on the other hand. Lhasa tones served as a typical case in Tibetan tonogenesis: First, the high vs. low tonal contrast results from the historical prevocalic voicing...

Ventilation and hypoxic ventilatory responsiveness in Chinese-Tibetan residents at 3,658 m.

When breathing ambient air at rest at 3,658 m altitude, Tibetan lifelong residents of 3,658 m ventilate as much as newcomers acclimatized to high altitude; they also ventilate more and have greater hypoxic ventilatory responses (HVRs) than do Han ("Chinese") long-term residents at 3,658 m. This suggests that Tibetan ancestry is advantageous in protecting resting ventilation levels during years ...

Human Impact on Vegetation Dynamics around Lhasa, Southern Tibetan Plateau, China

Human impact plays an increasing role on vegetation change even on the Tibetan Plateau, an area that is commonly regarded as an ideal place to study climate change. We evaluate the nature and extent of human impact on vegetation dynamics by the comparison of two areas: the relative highly populated Lhasa area and a nearby less populated Lhari County. Our results indicate that human impact has m...
